Materials Used in Vacuum Chamber

Vacuum chambers should be fabricated of a rigid material, so they can withstand the pressure differentials caused by vacuum. This is why vacuum chambers are usually made from aluminum, as it is capable of resisting most problems in this area. Aluminum vacuum chambers are strong enough to withstand low to medium vacuum environments. Since aluminum is non-magnetic, it won’t interfere with attempts to control the magnetic field inside the chamber from the outside.

A vacuum chamber should also prevent corrosion, absorption of moisture or trace gases, magnetic interference, etc. Aluminum is favorable for absorbing little moisture and being bothered by trace gases.

While good quality vacuum chambers are made of aluminum, there are some low to medium quality vacuum chambers that are made using brass, glass acrylic, or ceramic. These vacuum chambers usually include rubber o-rings to perfectly seal the ports.

If you require lower pressure you may need to choose an ultra-high quality vacuum chamber made of heavy-duty stainless steel. These vacuum chambers can withstand extreme pressures which other vacuum chambers can’t. They are also resistant to corrosion as a result of low magnetic interference and the material’s ability to resist erosion and absorb moisture and gases.

Because of the increased pressure, high-pressure vacuum chambers typically require steel bolts to seal the ports.

3 Steps to Build a Vacuum Chamber

Vacuum chambers have many practical applications, but they are not so cheap. In addition, vacuum chambers are not available everywhere. However, with a little knowledge, you can make your own vacuum chamber at a very lower cost.

01. Find a Chamber According to your Required Size and Shape

At first, you need to find a chamber. There is no specific size and shape for the chamber. Just make sure it is spacious enough to contain whatever you plan to put in it.

You should consider the following things when picking a chamber:

  • It should be rigid enough to withstand the pressure of the vacuum environment.
  • It should also be able to resist corrosion and the effects of moisture, as well as trace gases.
  • Magnetic interference might also need to be prevented, depending on your intended use for your vacuum chamber.

Though you can you brass, ceramic, or glass acrylic chamber, it’s better to use aluminum or stainless steel chambers to get the best result.

For the shape, it’s better to choose a cylinder shape chamber as this is the most commonly used shape for vacuum chambers.

02. Seal the top and bottom

If your chamber is shaped like a tube with evenly sized ends, you’ll need to make one end as a top and one as a bottom. The materials will have to be of equivalent size and must seal tightly, with no openings for air to escape.

Attach a rubber mat on both the top and bottom. This will create an airtight seal and also allow you to easily remove the top of the chamber.

03. Setup the Vacuum Pump

Finally, you will need to set the vacuum pump. You can choose any vacuum pump according to your requirement.

To set up the pump, drill a hole on the top of the chamber. Make sure the hole size is large enough to fit the pump perfectly. After putting the pump on the hole, seal it using rubber o-rings. Make sure there is no air leakage inside the chamber.

Now run some tests to check if the vacuum works or not. If there is no air leakage your vacuum pump should work properly.
